Hong Kong
Oyster hatchery
Impact
This project is expected to significantly improve the livelihood of local oyster growers in Hong Kong and South China. This expectation could be achieved by the following ways:
-
Deploying the relatively fast-growing, healthy and disease-resistant hatchery produced seeds could reduced grow out duration and thus mortality,
-
Growers can obtain healthy seeds at their wish and therefore uncertainty associated with supply from wild could be significantly removed – year-round stable supply of seeds guaranteed,
-
Oysters produced from hatchery seeds could pass through stringent food quality testing protocols after “depuration” and thus, can significantly improve consumer confidence to pay more for the product, and
-
If demand for the hatchery produced oysters imporved, which could ultimately, modernize the oyster cultivation while increasing the income from this traditional green coastal livelihood local industry.
