Dr. Basanta Pravas Sahu
Before joining Dr Rajan’s lab, HKU
I have completed my PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Indore specialization with virology. Prior to my PhD, I have gained the experience with the genetic improvement of Indian major carps through marker assisted selection at Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), India.
My scientific career so far
My research activity mainly focused on development of several genomic resources such as microsatellite, expressed sequence tags, mitochondrial and SNP markers in Indian major carps such as Labeo rohita, Catla catla. Furthermore the functional evaluation of these markers to decipher population genetics and construction of trait associated linkage map. These objectives involve various genotyping strategies to evaluate non-mendelian segregation pattern, next generation sequencing, broodstock management and several bioinformatics tools.
During my doctoral tenure I have gained the experience to study epidemiology of Orf virus, Avipox virus, Bovine ephemeral virus followed by their phylodynamics, population genomics and complete genome sequence analysis. It includes various classical virology techniques like cell culture, cloning, western blot and next generation sequencing.
Long term goal
To be an independent researcher and focus to improve “One health” mission.
My work plan within the Dr Rajan’s group

I am a senior research assistant at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). My work plan includes the development of potential genomic resources in Crassostrea hongkongensis and its evaluation to identify high salinity tolerance quantitative trait. Furthermore, decipher the prevalence of microbiome within C. hongkongensis and its correlation with mass mortality
